July 12 2014 – Mercantile London
Even if you aren't having the pleasure (?) of attending any of this years festivals, you can't get away from the fact that festival attire is most certainly a 'thing' now. Like Parisians, it may look 'thrown together' but in reality it takes much more effort than first glance and chucking a floral crown into your bag and hoping for the best just ain't gonna cut it.
The Mercantile family are getting ready for quite a few festivals this year so we took some attitude from the true bohemians (re: Stevie Nicks, Iggy Pop, Anita Pallenberg, Siouxsie Sioux, Edie Sedgewick, and Patti Smith) threw in a modern edge and selected the hardest working pieces from the summer collections. Take these ideas, add some kohl-rimmed eyes to a healthy sense of humour and you are festival ready my friend.
Denim cut offs (a la' Alexa) have been done to death but we are liking the longer length Bermuda this summer. It does the same thing as the cut off in keeping you cool but teamed with a skate shoe and cropped crochet vest, looks just that little bit well...cooler. Throw over a vintage silk duster coat for when the clouds appear and you can still twirl around like Stevie.
For true bohemian style only a maxi will do, but for a more modern twist, swap the Indian paisley for Bill & Mar's tropical palm print, mix up your eras by adding Valley of the Dolls style hair, 70's oversized glasses and 90's raver hi-tops and insist on being carried from stage to stage....well you don't want your hem dragging in the mud.
Bill & Mar Jungle Maxi Dress
£56.00
If ever a label screamed 'festival' it's British based Bellfield. Delivering a quality much higher than it's affordable price point and recently nominated for Young Fashion Brand of the Year at the Drapers Awards, summer 14 is all about bold tropical prints on jersey as sweatshirts, dresses and pants. We love the idea of wearing the separates as a 'suit', which means you can literally get out of your sleeping bag and go. Lazy? well yes, but comfy/warm in your tent at night, hell yes...who's laughing now ?
Add the matching rain jacket for the inevitable shower and print overload.
