Often overlooked, bar soap may not at first glance seem that exciting, but many well-being and apothecary brands are taking on the challenge to elevate this every day essential into a chance for a little self-care, and the ultimate relaxation.
Dook (meaning to submerge) is an award-winning artisanal company based in Edinburgh, who have elevated the humble bar of soap into a luxury beauty product with a sustainable slant. They make salt soap in small batches, with the key ingredients including the oils, being organic and coming from sustainable sources. Each batch is mixed and poured by hand resulting in distinctive, high-quality hand and body soap.
In 2018, after years of making cold processed soap with traditional ingredients, Dook decided to try adding Himalayan salt to the recipe and realised they had something special on their hands. The salt added a beautiful colour and texture, is rich in skin-loving minerals and created a firm, long-lasting bar. With this addition they found the hand-poured salt soaps to be dramatically different. The salt is packed full of skin loving trace minerals that is known for detoxifying, exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin and the organic coconut oil is the special ingredient that enables a soap so salty to have a wonderful lather. The salt exfoliates and softens the water letting the luxuriously creamy lather remove daily build up from your skin, whilst generous amounts of raw shea butter ensures that skin is left moisturised with essential oils of mandarin, cedar and bitter orange amongst others, providing the stimulating natural fragrances.

Sea salt is a natural ingredient with a long, rich history and a positive environmental impact too, so Dook make their handmade Bath Salts from a combination of Epsom Salt, Sicilian Sea Salt, (sourced from the Trapani Salt Flats) and Himalayan Salt infused with Dook's best-selling essential oil scents. Just add handful to your bath to ease achy muscles and calm the mind.
Sustainability and plastic reduction is central to Dook's manufacturing and retail approach. The main oils used in the soap are organic and from sustainable sources. Plastic is kept to a minimum during manufacture and all of the packaging and shipping materials are made out of exclusively recycled and recyclable materials. The collection is paraben free, palm oil free, cruelty-free, SLS free, water free and vegan.
